1968 Cobra Jet

Factory Drag Car

This is the car you may have seen in the late 60's & early 70's at your local drag strip. Ford introduced the 428 CJ by initially building only Fifty cars to go out and "scorch" the tracks ( and competition ). There's lots of magazine articles featuring these 50 cars. LOTS OF BIG RACING NAMES: Hubert Platt, Al Joniec, Don Nicholson, Gas      Rhonda, Jerry Harvey!  Check out this particular car on page 345 of "Crs of Sizzling 60". As recent as                   June 2003 "Mustang Monthly" chronicles the history of this car with  a great article & color photos!                       See Cobra Jet! 35th Anniversary; Mustang Monthly, June 2003, pp. 21-25, 78 or Nostalgia On The Hoof; Mustang Illustrated, June 1990, pp. 68, 69 for more details.

This Particular car is one of the original Ford built cars (serial numbers identified as 135007 to 135056). The car is VERY VERY correct as built by Ford, other than typical engine & mehcanical modifications performed in the early days as the car was raced. A copy of the "SS/F Class Record" by NHRA dated Sept 10, 1972 is included with sale. The car was clocked in Amarillo Texas at 125.46 MPH (10.95) seconds. Car team & owners at the time were "Turley & Caster".

Interior:
All original except carpet, near perfect dash, instruments, gauges, dash pod, 6 point roll cage, very little modifications over the years, original bucket seats, currently has Autometer Tach, MSD Ignition, Hurst Competiion In-Line floor shifter.

Exterior:
All original sheet metal, factory slighly rolled quarters for S/S Class, No wreck damage, NO racing mishaps!  Show quality paint restored to include Ford & Cobra Jet Logo, All chrome & glass are in excellent condition, panel fit is perfect due to low miles, period correct wheels & tires.

Mechanical:
428 Cobra Jet engine rebuilt around 1990, Running large tube open headers, Scatter shield, big shaft 4 speed "Rock Crusher", 9" rear Housing, Under-carriage all very clean, Still Factory, no under-coating, very little racing modifications or welding changes, Factory manual drum brakes, Car has not been recently tested @ track, In 1972 It held a NHRA record and is now eligible for History Drag Racing events. The car is complete, with all functional lights, VERY LOUD with only straight headers, A GREAT CAR FOR FOR DISPLAY & EXHIBITIONS, A
TRUE COLLECTOR CAR WITH DIRECT FORD HISTORY

Vehicle Conditon:
Only (1450) miles ever on this car ! The 428 Cobra Jet Mustang is a Ford Factory drag car, Not a modifled back yard / weekend quarter miler.  We would love to see this car included with others in future historic drag race events.  Mechanically it runs and drives.  We reccommend a thorough maintenance check & inspection
before testing under a heavy foot.
